Runs on your device
Your file is opened and processed by JavaScript inside this page. It is never uploaded and we never receive it. The page does download the processing library it needs from a public CDN the first time you use it - that request carries no part of your file.
Free tier: 5 runs per day for this tool, counted in your browser. The counter resets at midnight UTC and is not shared between browsers or devices.

What this tool is for
- Making a short looping demo for a README or a chat
- Turning a reaction clip into a GIF
| What it does | Turns a section of a video into an animated GIF using ffmpeg.wasm in your browser. |
|---|---|
| Accepted input | One video file (video/*), a start and end point, a frame rate (10-30 fps) and a width (320-720 px). |
| What you get back | An animated GIF. |
| Limits | Capped at 5 runs per day for this tool. The tool defaults to the first 5 seconds because GIFs grow very fast. |
| Browser requirements | A current desktop browser. ffmpeg.wasm downloads on first use. |
A worked example
- Input
- A screen recording, seconds 0 to 4, 15 fps, 480 px wide.
- What comes back
- A 4-second looping GIF 480 px across.
- Worth knowing
- GIF is an old format with a 256-colour palette. Gradients and video footage will band and dither visibly, and file size climbs steeply with length, frame rate and width. A 10-second 30 fps 720 px GIF can easily run to tens of megabytes.
If it does not work
The GIF is enormous
Cut the length, the frame rate or the width - all three multiply the size.
Colours look banded or dirty
GIF only holds 256 colours. That is the format, not the tool.
The tab ran out of memory
Use a shorter section or a lower width.

How to use Video to GIF
- Add your videoDrop the file onto the upload area.
- Choose the sectionSet the start and end points - keep it short.
- Set frame rate and widthLower both if the file needs to be small.

When to use Video to GIF
Reaction clips and memes
Turn a couple of seconds of video into a loop you can post or drop into a chat.
Showing a product feature
A short looping GIF in a listing or an email shows how something works without a video player.
Demonstrating a software step
A GIF of a click-through is easy to embed in documentation.
Adding motion to a slide or a README
A small GIF plays inside documents and code repositories that do not embed video.
The settings, explained
Video to GIF cuts a section of your video and encodes it as a GIF with ffmpeg.wasm in your browser. Three settings decide the file size, and they multiply together:
- Start and end
- The tool starts with the first 5 seconds because GIFs grow very fast. Keep it short.
- Frame rate (10-30 fps)
- Higher is smoother and larger. 10-15 fps is fine for most clips.
- Width (320-720 px)
- Wider is sharper and much larger.
What it cannot do
- GIF holds only 256 colours, so gradients and video footage band and dither visibly. That is the format, not the tool.
- File size climbs steeply: a 10-second, 30 fps, 720 px GIF can easily run to tens of megabytes.
- It is slow and memory-bound in the browser. The first run downloads ffmpeg.wasm, a video engine compiled for the browser, so it takes longer to start.
- The free allowance is 5 runs per day for this tool, counted in your browser and reset at midnight UTC.
How it compares with the alternatives
A short MP4 or WebM set to loop is far smaller and better looking than a GIF, and most modern platforms autoplay them. Use a GIF only where the destination needs one.
This tool makes that GIF without uploading the video anywhere.
How in-browser processing works, and exactly which tools are the exception, is explained on the why client-side page.
Getting a better result
Keep it to a few seconds
Length is the biggest driver of size.
Use 10-15 fps
Smooth enough for most clips at a fraction of the size.
Use 320-480 px wide
Plenty for chats and documentation.
Pick footage with flat colours
Screen recordings look better as GIFs than camera footage.

Why is my GIF so large?
Length, frame rate and width multiply together. Reduce all three.
Why do the colours look banded?
GIF only holds 256 colours.
Is my video uploaded?
No. The GIF is made in your browser.

A short looping MP4 or WebM, where the platform supports it.
Can I make the GIF loop forever?
GIFs normally loop by default in browsers and chat apps; that is how the format is displayed.
