Bingo as a teaching game
Word bingo turns revision into a game the whole class plays at once. A few ways to run it:
- Definitions: put key terms on the cards and read out definitions. Students must recognise the term to mark it.
- Languages: put words in the target language on the cards and call them in English.
- Maths: put answers on the cards and call the questions ("7 × 8").
- Getting to know you: "find someone who…" statements for the first week of term.
Use the shuffled caller's list so the calling order is random too, and tick each call off as you go - it makes checking a winner's card quick.
Worked example: how many words?
5×5 card = 25 squares
free centre square → 24 words per card
list of 28 words → each card uses 24 of the 28
chance a given word is on a card = 24 ÷ 28 ≈ 86%
With a longer list, each word appears on fewer cards and games last longer; with exactly 24 words, every card has the same words in a different order and someone wins sooner.
What this calculator does not do
- Word cards show text as typed; very long phrases make small print.
- Number cards follow the 75-ball format only (not 90-ball).
- Cards are not saved - print or screenshot them before you leave the page.
Frequently asked questions
How many words do I need?
At least as many as the squares on a card: 24 for 5×5 with a free space, 25 without it, 16 for 4×4 and 8 for 3×3 with a free space. More words make the cards more different from each other, so 30-40 is a good list for a class.
Are all the cards different?
Each card is an independent random pick and order from your list, so cards are very unlikely to repeat. With a short list (exactly 24 words) every card has the same words in different places, which still works for bingo.
How does number bingo work?
It uses the common 75-ball format: the B column has numbers 1-15, I 16-30, N 31-45, G 46-60 and O 61-75, with a free space in the middle. The caller's list gives all 75 calls in a random order.
How do I print the cards?
Press Print cards. Two cards fit on each page, and the caller's list prints on the last page. Use landscape or portrait - both work.
Can I use it for vocabulary practice?
Yes. Put the words on the cards and read out the definitions instead of the words, so students have to match each clue to its word.
