A night shift from 22:00 to 06:00 crosses midnight: the end is earlier than the start, so a day is added and the shift is 8 hours.

Hours and minutes vs decimal hours

Clocks count in base 60, payroll counts in base 10. 7 hours 45 minutes is 7.75 hours, not 7.45. Mixing the two up is the most common timesheet error - at 15 per hour it costs 4.50.

Each day's decimal is shown to two places, but the week total and pay are worked out from exact minutes, so rounding never adds up across days.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate hours worked?
Subtract the start time from the end time and then subtract any unpaid break. 09:00 to 17:30 is 8 hours 30 minutes; minus a 30-minute break that is 8 hours 00 minutes.
How do I convert hours and minutes to decimal hours?
Divide the minutes by 60 and add them to the hours. 7 hours 45 minutes is 7 + 45 / 60 = 7.75 hours. Payroll systems usually want decimal hours.
Does it handle night shifts that go past midnight?
Yes. If the end time is earlier than the start time, the shift is treated as ending the next day. 22:00 to 06:00 is 8 hours.
How is pay worked out?
Total decimal hours multiplied by the hourly rate you enter. It does not add overtime, tax or deductions.
Can I add up several durations?
Yes. In the "Add & subtract" tab enter hours, minutes and seconds on each row and set each row to + or −. 1:45 plus 2:30 is 4:15.
Can I print the timesheet?
Yes. Press "Print timesheet" for a clean printout of the days, hours and totals without the rest of the page.

What this calculator does not do

  • No overtime rules, tax or deductions - those depend on your country and contract.
  • A single shift cannot be longer than 24 hours.
  • Times are entered with your browser's time picker; daylight saving changes during a shift are not adjusted.
