    Divide, multiply, subtract, bring down

Long division turns one big division into a series of small ones, working through the dividend one digit at a time from the left:

    1. Divide - how many times does the divisor fit into the current number? Write that digit in the answer.
    2. Multiply - multiply that digit by the divisor and write it underneath.
    3. Subtract - the result must be smaller than the divisor; if not, the digit was too small.
    4. Bring down the next digit of the dividend and repeat.

When no digits are left, what remains is the remainder. To keep going as a decimal, put a decimal point in the answer and bring down zeros. If a remainder comes back that you have seen before, the digits from that point on repeat forever - the calculator puts them in brackets, so 14.(285714) means 14.285714285714…

    Worked example: 1234 ÷ 5

    1. 5 does not go into 1, so take 1212 ÷ 5 = 2, 2 × 5 = 10, 12 − 10 = 2
    2. Bring down 3 to make 2323 ÷ 5 = 4, 4 × 5 = 20, 23 − 20 = 3
    3. Bring down 4 to make 3434 ÷ 5 = 6, 6 × 5 = 30, 34 − 30 = 4
    4. No digits left1234 ÷ 5 = 246 remainder 4 (check: 246 × 5 + 4 = 1234)

What this calculator does not do

    • Whole numbers only: up to 30 digits for the dividend and 15 for the divisor. To divide decimals, multiply both by the same power of 10 first.
    • No negative numbers - divide the sizes, then apply the sign rule (negative ÷ positive is negative).
    • Decimal answers go up to 20 places.

    Frequently asked questions

What are the steps of long division?
Divide, multiply, subtract, bring down - and repeat. Take the first part of the dividend that the divisor fits into, write how many times it fits, multiply back, subtract, then bring down the next digit and do it again.
    What is the remainder?
    What is left over when the divisor no longer fits. 1234 ÷ 5 = 246 remainder 4, because 246 × 5 = 1230 and 1234 − 1230 = 4.
How do I get a decimal answer instead of a remainder?
Choose a number of decimal places. The calculator writes a decimal point after the quotient and keeps bringing down zeros. 100 ÷ 7 = 14.285714…, where 285714 repeats forever.
How do I check a long division answer?
Multiply the quotient by the divisor and add the remainder - you should get the dividend back. 246 × 5 + 4 = 1234.
Why can't I divide by zero?
No number multiplied by 0 gives a non-zero dividend, so division by zero has no answer. The calculator explains that instead of returning a number.
