Mean, Median, Mode & Range Calculator
Paste a list of numbers to get the mean, median, mode and range, with the data sorted and each answer worked out step by step. It tells you when there is no mode or more than one.
Separate with commas, spaces or new lines. Negative numbers and decimals are fine.
Sorted data
The middle value (or the middle two) is highlighted.
Working
Worked example: 1, 2, 2, 3, 4
- Mean: add them up and divide by the count
(1 + 2 + 2 + 3 + 4) ÷ 5 = 12 ÷ 5 = 2.4 - Median: sort, then take the middle value (the 3rd of 5)
1, 2, [2], 3, 4 → 2 - Mode: the value that appears most often
2 appears twice, every other value once → 2 - Range: largest minus smallest
4 − 1 = 3
With an even count, say 1, 2, 3, 4, the median is the average of the two middle values: (2 + 3) ÷ 2 = 2.5.
Which average should you use?
Mean uses every value, which makes it the best summary when the data is fairly symmetric - test scores, heights, daily temperatures.
Median ignores how extreme the extremes are. Use it when a few values are far from the rest: house prices, salaries, delivery times. In 20, 22, 25, 27, 400 the mean is 98.8 but the median, 25, describes a typical value far better.
Mode is the only one that works for categories (the most common shoe size, the most chosen answer). A data set can have one mode, several, or none - if every value appears equally often, no value is "most common", and this calculator says there is no mode rather than listing everything.
What this calculator does not do
- Raw data only: it does not accept frequency tables or grouped data.
- Values are compared exactly, so 2 and 2.0 are the same value but 2 and 2.0001 are not.
- Results are rounded to six decimal places for display.
