Worked example

Matric 1,000 / 1,100, FSc 980 / 1,100, MDCAT 160 / 180, with the 10 / 40 / 50 weights:

matric 1,000 ÷ 1,100 = 90.909% × 10% = 9.091 FSc 980 ÷ 1,100 = 89.091% × 40% = 35.636 MDCAT 160 ÷ 180 = 88.889% × 50% = 44.444 aggregate = 89.17%

To reach a 92% aggregate with the same matric and FSc marks, the MDCAT part must supply 92 − 9.091 − 35.636 = 47.273 points, so the MDCAT percentage must be 47.273 ÷ 0.5 = 94.55% - that is 171 out of 180 (170.2, rounded up to a whole mark).

How the MDCAT aggregate is calculated

Medical and dental admissions in Pakistan rank students by an aggregate: each exam is turned into a percentage, multiplied by its weight, and the three parts are added.

aggregate = matric% × 10% + FSc% × 40% + MDCAT% × 50%

The 10 / 40 / 50 split is the formula most admission bodies have used in recent years, with matric and FSc out of 1,100 and the MDCAT out of 180. Some institutions use different weights - for example their own entry test, or FSc and test only - so the calculator lets you change every number.

Because the MDCAT carries half the weight, each MDCAT mark is worth about 0.28 aggregate points (50 ÷ 180), while each FSc mark is worth about 0.036 (40 ÷ 1,100). That is why a few MDCAT marks move you so far up a merit list.

Frequently asked questions

How is the MDCAT aggregate calculated?
Each exam is turned into a percentage and weighted: aggregate = matric% × 10% + FSc% × 40% + MDCAT% × 50%. With matric 1,000/1,100, FSc 980/1,100 and MDCAT 160/180 the aggregate is 9.09 + 35.64 + 44.44 = 89.17%.
Is the MDCAT aggregate formula the same for every university?
No. The 10/40/50 split is the most common, but admission bodies set their own weights and can change them each year. Some use FSc and their own entry test only. Check the prospectus and type its weights into the calculator.
How many MDCAT marks do I need for a 92% aggregate?
It depends on your matric and FSc marks. With 1,000/1,100 in matric and 980/1,100 in FSc you need 94.55% in the MDCAT, which is 171 out of 180. Enter your own marks and target to see yours.
Can I use FSc part 1 marks if my final result is not out?
Some admission bodies allow provisional calculations on part 1 marks; enter them with the matching total to get an estimate, then recalculate when your full result arrives.
What is a good MDCAT aggregate for a government medical college?
Closing merit changes every year and differs by province and college, so there is no fixed number. Compare your aggregate with the previous year's closing merit published by your admission body.

What this calculator does not do

  • It does not know the closing merit of any college or predict admission.
  • Weights, totals and eligibility rules are set by PMDC and each admitting body and change from year to year.
  • It does not apply any additional marks, quota or hafiz-e-Quran rules.
