Unit Converter
Pick a category, type a value and choose the two units to convert between. You get the answer, the exact factor or formula used, and the same value in every other unit of that category - eleven categories, including marla and kanal for land and tola for gold.

Exact conversion factors
Most everyday conversions rest on a handful of exact definitions agreed in 1959 and since. Every other factor on this page is built from them, so the converter never relies on a rounded figure such as "1 inch ≈ 2.5 cm".
| Unit | Exact value | Handy rounded figure |
|---|---|---|
| 1 inch | 2.54 cm | - |
| 1 foot | 30.48 cm (12 inches) | about 0.3 m |
| 1 mile | 1,609.344 m | about 1.6 km |
| 1 pound | 0.45359237 kg | about 0.45 kg; 1 kg ≈ 2.2 lb |
| 1 tola | 11.6638038 g (180 grains) | about 11.66 g |
| 1 US gallon | 3.785411784 L | about 3.79 L |
| 1 UK gallon | 4.54609 L | about 4.55 L |
| 1 acre | 4,046.8564224 m² | about 0.4 hectare |
| 1 marla (as used here) | 225 ft² = 20.903 m² | 1 kanal = 20 marla = 4,500 ft² |
| 1 kWh (one electricity unit) | 3,600,000 J | about 860 kcal |
| 0 °C | 32 °F = 273.15 K | °F = °C × 1.8 + 32 |
Worked example: feet to metres, and a plot in marla
The converter opens with 5 feet in metres. One foot is exactly 0.3048 m, so:
5 ft × 0.3048 = 1.524 m
A 10 marla plot, using the 225 square-foot marla:
10 × 225 = 2,250 ft²
2,250 × 0.09290304 = 209.03 m²
2,250 ÷ 4,500 = 0.5 kanal
And a temperature, which is not a simple multiplication because the two scales start at different zeros: 37 °C is 37 × 9/5 + 32 = 98.6 °F.
Units that trip people up
- US and UK volumes differ. A US gallon is about 3.79 litres and a UK gallon about 4.55 litres; pints, cups and fluid ounces differ too.
- Kilobyte or kibibyte. Drive makers use 1 GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes; many operating systems count in GiB of 1,073,741,824 bytes, so a "1 TB" drive shows as about 931 GiB.
- Calories on food labels are kilocalories: a 250 Calorie snack is 250 kcal, or 1,046 kJ.
- Marla is not one fixed size. Housing societies mostly use 225 ft²; older revenue records use 272.25 ft². Check the documents for the plot you are looking at.
- Electricity units on a bill are kilowatt-hours. A 1,000 W heater running for 2 hours uses 2 kWh, or 2 units.
Frequently asked questions
How many centimetres are in an inch?
Exactly 2.54. Since 1959 the inch has been defined as 25.4 mm, so 1 foot is exactly 30.48 cm and 1 mile is exactly 1,609.344 m.
How do I convert Celsius to Fahrenheit?
Multiply by 9/5 and add 32. 100 °C is 100 × 9/5 + 32 = 212 °F. To go the other way, subtract 32 and multiply by 5/9. −40 is the same in both scales.
How many square feet are in a marla and a kanal?
This converter uses 1 marla = 225 square feet and 1 kanal = 20 marla = 4,500 square feet, the sizes most housing societies in Pakistan use. Older revenue records often use a 272.25 square-foot marla, so check which one your documents mean.
Is a kilobyte 1,000 or 1,024 bytes?
Both are in use. The SI units (kB, MB, GB) are powers of 1,000; the binary units (KiB, MiB, GiB) are powers of 1,024. That is why a 1 TB drive shows as about 931 GiB in some operating systems.
How much does one tola weigh?
One tola is 11.6638038 grams (180 grains), the unit still used for gold in Pakistan and India. 10 tola is 116.638 grams.
Is a US gallon the same as a UK gallon?
No. A US gallon is 3.785411784 litres and a UK (imperial) gallon is 4.54609 litres. Pints and fluid ounces differ too, so pick the right one when you follow a recipe or a fuel figure.
What this calculator does not do
- Answers are rounded for display to 10 significant figures; the factors themselves are exact definitions.
- It converts within one category only - for example it cannot turn litres of water into kilograms, which needs a density.
- Marla sizes vary by region and record; this page uses 225 square feet. A year is taken as 365 days.
- It does not convert currencies or fuel economy.
