Background Remover
Choose a photo and an open AI model removes the background on your own device - the photo is never uploaded. Download a transparent PNG, or put the subject on white, black or any colour and save a JPG. The model downloads once and your browser keeps it.

How the background is removed on your device
- Your photo is read by your browser, not sent to a server. Very large photos are scaled so the longest side is at most 4,000 pixels.
- A copy is shrunk to the model's size - 320 × 320 pixels for Fast, 1,024 × 1,024 for Best quality - and its colours are scaled the way the model was trained.
- An open AI segmentation model runs in the browser, in a background thread so the page stays usable, and scores every pixel: subject or background.
- The scores become a mask, which is scaled back up to your photo's full size and used as its transparency.
The model file downloads once from Hugging Face and your browser keeps it, so the next photo starts straight away. Nothing about your photo goes with that download.
Worked example: a 4,000 × 3,000 phone photo
photo 4,000 × 3,000 = 12,000,000 pixels
model input (Best) 1,024 × 1,024 = 1,048,576 pixels
model output a probability per pixel, 0 to 1
opacity = (p − lowest) ÷ (highest − lowest) × 255
p = 0.98 → 0.98 × 255 = 250 (kept)
p = 0.01 → 0.01 × 255 = 3 (removed)
p = 0.50 → 0.50 × 255 = 128 (half see-through)
mask scaled back to 4,000 × 3,000, then applied
Here the lowest probability in the photo is 0 and the highest is 1. Values in between give partly see-through pixels, which is what keeps hair and soft edges from looking cut out with scissors.
Fast or Best quality?
| Fast | Best quality | |
|---|---|---|
| Model | U²-Netp (Apache 2.0 licence) | ISNet general-use, 8-bit build (MIT licence) |
| One-time download | 4.6 MB | 44 MB |
| Works at | 320 × 320 | 1,024 × 1,024 |
| Speed | About a second on most devices | A few seconds to about half a minute, depending on your device |
| Best for | Quick cut-outs, people, phones on mobile data | Product photos, hair, fine edges |
Tips for a clean cut-out
- Use a photo where the subject is in focus and stands out from the background in colour or brightness.
- Glass, smoke, fine mesh and very thin objects are hard for any model; check the edges with the Mask view.
- For marketplace listings, choose a white background and download a JPG - most marketplaces ask for one.
Frequently asked questions
Is my photo uploaded to a server?
No. The photo is opened, processed and saved by your browser. What downloads is the AI model itself - from Hugging Face, once - and nothing about your photo is sent with it.
Why does the first photo take longer?
The first time, your browser downloads the AI model: 4.6 MB for Fast or 44 MB for Best quality. It is then kept in your browser's storage, so later photos start straight away.
Which option should I choose, Fast or Best quality?
Fast works well for people and simple product shots and takes about a second. Best quality uses a larger model at 1,024 × 1,024 pixels and handles hair and fine edges better; it takes from a few seconds to about half a minute, depending on your device.
How do I get a white background for Amazon, Daraz or Shopify?
After the background is removed, choose White and download a JPG. Marketplaces usually ask for a pure white background on the main product image.
Does it work on iPhone HEIC photos?
Not directly. Convert the HEIC photo to JPG first with the free Image Converter, then remove the background here.
Why are some edges wrong?
Glass, smoke, fine mesh and subjects that blend into the background are hard for any model. Check the Mask view, try Best quality, or use a photo where the subject stands out more clearly.
What this tool does not do
- It removes the background automatically; it has no brush for fixing edges by hand.
- Very large photos are scaled so the longest side is at most 4,000 pixels.
- It accepts JPG, PNG and WebP up to 30 MB; HEIC needs converting first.
- Best quality needs about 44 MB of browser storage and is slower on older phones.
