Worked example

Cash Rs 200,000, bank Rs 450,000, 2 tola of gold at an example rate of Rs 350,000 a tola, and Rs 100,000 of debt due now. Silver at Rs 9,591 a tola sets the nisab.

gold = 2 × 350,000 = 700,000 wealth = 200,000 + 450,000 + 700,000 = 1,350,000 after debts = 1,350,000 − 100,000 = 1,250,000 nisab = 52.5 × 9,591 = 503,527.50 1,250,000 is above the nisab, so zakat is due: zakat = 1,250,000 × 2.5% = Rs 31,250

2.5% is the same as one fortieth, so a quick check is to divide by 40: 1,250,000 ÷ 40 = 31,250.

Nisab: the threshold for zakat

Zakat is due on wealth that has reached the nisab and been held for one lunar year (the hawl). The nisab is the value of 52.5 tola (about 612 g) of silver or 7.5 tola (about 87.5 g) of gold. The rate is 2.5% of your zakatable wealth.

Because silver is far cheaper than gold, the silver nisab is much lower, so more people reach it. Many scholars recommend the silver nisab when your wealth is a mix of cash and gold, as it is the more cautious choice for the giver; the calculator lets you choose either.

Prices change daily. Use the rate for the karat of gold you actually own - a 22K or 21K jewellery rate, not the 24K rate, if that is what you have.

Zakat deducted by banks in Pakistan

Under the Zakat and Ushr system, banks deduct zakat at 2.5% on the first day of Ramadan from savings and similar profit-bearing accounts whose balance is at or above the nisab the government sets for that year. For Ramadan 1447 (February 2026) the notified nisab was Rs 503,529, worked out from a silver price of Rs 9,591 a tola.

Current accounts are not deducted. You can also file a declaration of exemption with your bank before Ramadan (the CZ-50 form) if you prefer to pay zakat yourself - for example, because you follow a school of thought that differs on the deduction, or you calculate it on your whole wealth.

If your bank already deducted zakat from an account, count that as zakat paid and subtract it from the amount this calculator shows.

What usually counts, and what does not

  • Counts: cash, bank balances, gold and silver (most scholars in Pakistan include jewellery), stock you hold for sale, money owed to you that you expect to recover, and shares or investments held for trade.
  • Does not count: the home you live in, your car, furniture, clothes and the tools or machinery you use to earn a living.
  • Subtract: debts and bills that are due now, such as unpaid rent or an instalment that is due - not the whole of a long-term loan.

Frequently asked questions

What is the nisab for zakat in 2026?
The nisab is the value of 52.5 tola (about 612 g) of silver or 7.5 tola (about 87.5 g) of gold, so it changes with metal prices. For the bank deduction in Ramadan 1447 (February 2026) the government notified Rs 503,529, based on silver at Rs 9,591 a tola. Multiply 52.5 by today's silver rate for the current figure.
How is zakat calculated on gold?
Multiply the weight of your gold in tola by today's rate per tola for that karat, add it to your other zakatable wealth, subtract debts due now and, if the total is at or above the nisab, pay 2.5% of it. 2 tola at Rs 350,000 adds Rs 700,000 to your total.
Is zakat due on gold jewellery that is worn?
In the Hanafi school, followed by most people in Pakistan, yes - gold and silver jewellery is zakatable whether worn or not. Some other schools exempt jewellery in normal use. Follow the view of the scholar you trust.
Do I have to pay zakat if the bank already deducted it?
The amount the bank deducted on 1st Ramadan counts as zakat paid on that balance. Subtract it from the total this calculator shows, and pay the rest on your other wealth.
Can I stop the bank deducting zakat?
Yes. File a declaration of exemption (the CZ-50 form) with your bank before Ramadan, then pay zakat yourself. Current accounts are not deducted in any case.
Is zakat due on my house or car?
No. The home you live in, your car, furniture and personal belongings are not zakatable. Property or goods held for sale are.

What this calculator does not do

  • It is a calculation aid, not a religious ruling; scholars differ on some assets, such as worn jewellery, pension funds and long-term receivables.
  • It does not track whether a lunar year (hawl) has passed on your wealth.
  • Gold and silver prices are not fetched: type today's rate for your karat.
  • It does not cover agricultural produce (ushr), livestock or sadaqat al-fitr.
